Why do I do this to myself?
weight: 293.1
exercise: morning speed focused weightlifting ~1 hour
food intake: flexible dieting with focus on high protein intake <= 2200 calories a day EXCEPT I was TOO FLEXIBLE and drank alcohol the night before hence my weight increase …ugh
This post is really about trying not to beat myself up too much, along with not compounding bad choices. I KNEW I had to get up by 3 AM to get my workout in before having to leave to get to my oldest son’s track meet (he runs the 3600 or a little over 2 miles for normal folks like me haha). But doubt crept in last night because we went out with some friends to a restaurant quite a distance from our house and after realizing I probably wasn’t getting home til almost 11 PM I continued a tradition/habit of mine of trying to build in an “excuse” to get out of having to workout after only 4 hours of sleep. I drank some beers (oh those empty calories) and told myself I was going to feel like crap in the morning so I should just sleep in to get the benefits of extra sleep. However, I did consciously leave my alarm still set for 3:05 AM just to punish myself thinking I would have to wake up long enough to roll over and hit the button to kill the alarm. IT TURNED OUT TO BE A CRUCIAL DECISION FOR ME. When my alarm went off and the effects of the alcohol had warn off I realized … I should just GO workout and get it done. Just think if I hadn’t drank the night before I could have actually felt BETTER than I did during my work with lack of sleep AND a hangover…. life lessons.
Let this be a call to action though for those in similar situations. Even if its something you don’t to do, set the alarm or start the motions because honestly your body once it starts going just seems to continue like its easier than trying to stop. Reminds me of physics to be honest and one of Newton’s laws of motion (googled it - it’s his First Law of Motion), “an object that is moving will continue to move at a constant speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an external force”, which means once you get the ball rolling its actually easier to just keep going!
